"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

—Pablo Picasso

Arts. . .

Collaborative Activities:

Imagination Tribe: A creativity inspiration group with many collaborative projects and ATC trades. ATC's are Artist Trading Cards—mini, pocket-sized works of art.

  • ATC Trade of 10, April 2006
  • Collaborative ABC book, March 2006
  • ATC Trade of 26, December 2005

Emily's Activities:

  • Emily has enjoyed instruction from the Royal Academy of Dance Pre-ballet class, also at Maryland Hall. She has worked on proper technique, stretching and body awareness, bringing these skills home to practice on our homestage. She continues to enjoy both ballet and theater, working with choreography, costume and prop design at home.
  • Emily has participated in several Kindermusik classes through the years.
  • Emily has enjoyed the Clay I and II classes at Maryland Hall, a center for the creative arts. Through this class, Emily has explored various clay techniques, including coil and pinch work, and brings her experiences home to share with her siblings in various media from model magic clay, to polymer clay to greenware clay.
  • Emily has enjoyed the Young Picasso class at Maryland Hall, a center for the creative arts. Through this class, Emily has explored art in various media and brings her experiences home to share with her siblings in their art center. These are some of the works Emily has created in her class.

Julia's Activities:

  • Julia has enjoyed instruction from the Royal Academy of Dance Pre-ballet class, also at Maryland Hall. She has worked on proper technique, stretching and body awareness. Julia has brought these skills home to practice on our homestage with her sister, who also took dance, and her brother, who loves to learn anything his sisters can do.
  • Julia has participated in several Kindermusik classes throughout the years.
  • Julia has also enjoyed instruction through the Young Picasso class, skills which she continues to use at home in her art exploration. Below are some of the pieces that Julia created in her art class.

Sam's Activities:

  • Kindermusik® Class: Sam has participated in Kindermusik Our Village® at Maryland Hall, learning rhythm, rhyme, pitch, body awareness and social skills. Sam has brought this Kindermusik® experience home with him through his home materials package, which includes a CD, a home instrument and two song books. We listen to the CD on a regular basis and incorporate the songs in our play, travel and together time.
  • Sam has also enjoyed instruction through the Creative Hands class at Maryland Hall, skills which he continues to use at home in art exploration.

Performances and Exhibits:

  • Theatreworks presentation of Freedom Train Live performance 2/1/05.
  • Theatreworks presentation of A Christmas Carol Live performance 12/16/04.
  • National Museum of the American Indian. The museum features both contemporary and historical artwork by North American Native Peoples. Exhibits include bead and textile work, sculpture, pottery, basket work, woodwork among many other things. Contemporary Craftsmen can also be seen working on native boats in the Potomac.
  • Maryland Hall Exhibit Gallery. This gallery features rotating exhibits of art produced by their numerous artists in residence. We have seen oil on canvas exhibits, iron and neon sculpture, and wood sculpture produced from tree burls. Maryland Hall also features student work in several hallway exhibits, providing an enriching view of the artistic process from glass and pottery work, to photography and portrait art. My favorite changing exhibit is produced by the portrait class: each class member may work in a different media to produce a portrait from a single model sitting. The differences in these portraits are dramatic! This exhibit, more than any other, demonstrates the influence of perspective and medium in producing "reality" or "likeness".
  • Woodcarving of Rosa Parks—image found in conjunction with our research into Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement.
  • SignStage presents Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Live performance 2/1/03. A clear example of the interconnectedness of learning through life. We checked this book out of the library, per a friends' recommendation, only to run across the flyer for this show the following week! This production has spurred our interest in American Sign Language, which we are now pursuing in preparation for the performance.
