HOMESTEADING

OUR GARDENS

BACK TO UNSCHOOLING

"When I go into the garden with a spade, and dig a bed, I feel such an exhilaration and health that I discover that I have been defrauding myself all this time in letting others do for me what I should have done with my own hands."

—Ralph Waldo Emerson

Science. . .
...is all around us, and kids are natural empiricists.

Homesteading

We've been interested in gardening ever since we got our first tiny 2' x 5' plot at a rental house in Albuquerque. The girls and I loved watering the strawberries, tomatoes and flowers we managed to cram into that space, and when we moved to our own home in Southern Maryland, we knew gardens were high on our list. We expanded greatly to include several vegetables and herbs and began our love affair with edible landscaping. Soon, we found ourselves with a small flock of laying hens and fresh eggs and at the bottom of slippery slope.

In the summer of 2005, we moved to a 5.25 acre farmette in Northwestern Maryland and have expanded our homesteading adventure exponentially. We now share our land with about 40 chickens, 3 turkeys, 2 goats and 2 pigs. We've planted countless herbs, fruits and vegetables and hope to start a small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in 2007, sharing our bounty with those in our community.

Homesteading brings countless learning opportunities, from incubating eggs to raising newborn kittens by hand. We've learned about nature, life-cycles, birth and death. We've learned about each other and cooperation and interdependence. We've learned what makes life whole and wonderous and worth living.
